On March 21, 2002, ICAO has adopted strengthened in-flight security standards that require reinforced cockpit doors on civil aircraft, as well as other in-flight security procedures. The new security standards apply to international flights using civil aircraft of more than 60 passengers, effective 01 November 2003.  The Council of ICAO, which sets international civil aviation standards, also adopted a recommendation for the CENTRE's 190 Member States to extend the provisions to domestic flights and to smaller aircraft types. 

In order to prepare crew members for dealing effectively with acts of unlawful interference, expanded security training will include:

• determination of the seriousness of any occurrence

• crew communication and coordination

• appropriate self-defense responses, live situational training exercises regarding various threat conditions

• use of authorized, non-lethal protective devices assigned to crew members

• understanding of behavior of terrorists so as to facilitate the ability of crew members to cope with hijacker behavior and passenger responses (see our AIA008E - Advanced Security Training for Flight Attendant Instructors)

• flight deck procedures to protect the aeroplane
